Galway rain didn’t slow us down

Today we spent the whole day in Galway. Our hotel is only 15/20 min walk to the city center so we left the car in the car park and headed out by foot. Our first stop was outside the city center just a bit. It was the Galway Catherdral. It’s not a real old church. The outside is gray and unassuming but the inside? Wow!  Fantastic stain glass and wood features and organ and I could go on and on. We walked in during a service and sat down (not allowed to circulate). So I just got to sit, mouth parted in awe. Also said some of the parts that were similar to my service. Then picture time. The girls were very patient with me as I went around snapping pics of all the stain glass. They’re so bright and colorful. On the outside the color did not show so it was quite a surprise. Next we mannered through the nearby university and headed towards the city center. We stopped in a few shops just to get a preview for later shopping. Then we had a guided tour. Had high hopes but it fell a bit short. As our guide said ‘Irishmen talk a lot to say a little’. True story. Learned some of the up and down and up of Galway’s prosperity. Not much original ‘old’ feature to be found. Our guide said the Irish are very good about reusing things so parts of building were torn down and reused in other things (some also burned in a couple of great fires). That’s why he decor in  a lot of Irish pubs is a mismatch of random things. It’s whatever they could find. Got some info but was glad when it was over. Then we had lunch (fish and chips) to get out of the rain and try to warm up a bit. Then a bit of shopping to help the economy. Last we went to a pub to watch the World Cup and then listen to some local music. The cold rain couldn’t damper the day. (Kinda what we’ve been expecting but have been lucky to avoid)
