Saw ruins and got ruined by gps
Some days things just don’t go your way. Today was one of those days. I mean I’m in Ireland so things can only be so bad but things did not go quite as planned. Our departure was delayed by breakfast not starting until 8. Then reception wasn’t open til 9. Today I was the driver (ahhhhhh) and Julie navigated. Only 3 ‘oh shit’ moments and rest went pretty well (little curb-ig once, a roundabout that didn’t go as planned and required a uturn, and scrapped a side mirror going into parking garage). I had to go through big and small roundabouts, highways with regular roads and small back roads the width of one car (THANK GOODNESS no one was coming the other way) and rollercoaster up and down twisty turvey roads. I think only 3 ‘oh shits’ is not too bad considering! And it was the longest drive from Portrush down to Galway with some stops and detours due to gps not working in our favor. Gps was not our friend today. We found the Grianan of Aileach (Donegal) pretty easily. Interesting We couldn’t find the location of the Franciscan Abbey ruins in Donegal we were looking for and actually came upon them quite by accident. The ruins were underwhelming. We did find a great gastric pub for lunch. Made up for the ruins. Then gps took us in a meandering route as we were trying to find the Stairway to Heaven in a National Park. Thank goodness Jill’s keen memory recognized that it was actually by the marble cave we did the other day. Like literally 400 meters away (too bad none of us picked up on that when we were there last). Jill and Kerry took off at their fast pace to try and see it but only made it part way because of our time crunch. Julie and I made it part of the way but the chilly drizzle picked up we decided to head back. Then we had a few hours to get to Galway. It will be good to get some rest tonight. Tomorrow we have all day in Galway.
