Zagreb's adventures today began with a little walk through the market. Stall after stall of every food imaginable. It was a farmer's market on steroids. Flowers too- so gorgeous. After helping their economy a little bit, we headed up to old town to check out 3 museums. First up was the museum of Naive Art. The art was first connected with peasants and working men. They are artists
who are more or less self-taught, painters and sculptors with no formal art training, but who have achieved their own creative style and a high level of art. Many of the pieces were from Ivan Generalic. Some of them were painted on glass. He would draw first then lay a piece of glass on top of the drawing and paint it. Amazing. The colors were so bright and the painting were so detailed. ( find info here: http://www.hmnu.org/en/vodic.asp ). The next museum was the museum of broken relationships. Kid you not. Not sure what to expect but it was interesting. People donated items from their relationship and wrote a blurb about it's importance. Interesting to see into people's lives. 9 http://brokenships.com/en/visit/the_exhibits ). It was worth the time. Our last museum stop was a museum with the art of Ivan Mestrovic. Interestingly enough he has ties to Chicago. He is from Croatia but he lived in the US for quite a while (he didn't like the politics that rose out of WWII). He created the 2 statues by congress plaza- the bowman and the spearman. The museum was only a small collection of his work but it was nice to see up close. After lunch we headed to the cemetery, which was a must see from internet suggestions. It is HUGE. Visiting it reminds you, how much the people here in Europe respect and pay homage to their loved ones who have died. So unlike most of us in the US. In many place in Europe, if you don't maintain your plot (and some are QUITE elaborate) then it can be given to someone else, so there is some incentive to keep it up.
Interesting pale pepper in the middle that we've had (by we, I mean others not me)
Each umbrella- a new stand w/food. This was only a PORTION of it!
If you can zoom in to read the writing on the chocolate, it's pretty funny!
One of the items from the exhibit.
Even my coke was in a fancy glass at our fancy lunch restaurant.
