Last day in Madrid …..make it count!

We tried to pack in as much as our feet would allow on our last day in Madrid.  With our highest number of steps yet we were successful.  There were some highs (new art and pretty park) and some lows (some stores/stalls not open).  Overall it was a Goya day (notice the art pun?)  We started by taking the metro towards the Prado art museum which we would be visiting.  It was not quite open, so Julie indulged me and we walked around a church next door— San Jeronimo de Real.  I love how each church is different.  Strolled around, saying prayers and taking pictures.  Then we headed to the Prado.  No pictures allowed, so I’ll have to paint the scene. :). Imagine it……lots of paintings on the walls.  Large groups all cueing to see the most noteworthy pieces. I saw art from some painters I’ve heard of but I’m not sure I’ve seen a bunch of-Goya, Rueben,Rembrandt. Also found a new one- Bosch- who I think was quite before his time in the type of paintings we say.  Also unsure why there was a Picasso there.  It was like the game “one of these things just doesn’t belong”.  We lasted longer at this museum than the Reina Sofia but we hit a point when we couldn’t process anymore.  Next we excitedly headed towards some stalls where locals sold their wares that we saw as we drove in- only to be hit with disappointment in seeing them disassembling the stalls :( No local shopping for us.  Instead we headed back where we were towards Retiro Park.  We grabbed a sandwich for a little picnic in the park.  We sat on a shaded bench as the breeze blew.  Great moment, just taking it and watching the world pass you by.  Didn’t walk the entire park but saw the Crystal Palace (used to be a sort of greenhouse), also the rose garden and the fallen angel statue.  Then a walk and a few metro stops got us back to the hotel to rest our feet and plan the evening.  Again, some highs (new cork purse) and some lows (closed ceramic shop and Italian place only served pizza-not the pasta that was on the menu).  Ended with some tasty treats.  Didn’t see everything Madrid had to offer but we saw a lot. Glad we were able to make it here-it’s been 2 years in the making because of Covid. Long bus day tomorrow but then we’ll be in Granada, so we travel on!

Views along our walk….

I obviously have never seen a turtle sunning before because how he has his legs sticking out made me giggle.
