Monasteries.....fitting for a Sunday visit
Today was short on sights. Only 3 things. We visited 2 of the 6 Greek Orthodox monasteries in Meteora (and saw a couple more perched on the rocks - one you needed a cable car to get to but it only fits 2 people at a time). At one time there were 24 monasteries, most only accessible by via removable ladders or rope and basket (to keep the Turks away). Apparently next to the Acropolis visiting the monasteries is second on the list of popular things to see. The first monastery was easy to get to. No climbing necessary. It no longer is a working monastery. There are no monks that live there. It is now run and inhabited by nuns. There was a strict dress code required skirts for women below the knee and pants for men. Also as George put it we had to cover up on top. No cleavage allowed! Of course no pictures allowed inside :( Really gorgeous paintings adorning the walls in both. Dark (on purpose) in the typical orthodox style. Simply wonderful. The second one was just as beautiful and example of Byzantine art. We reached it after climbing down a series of steps in the forest. The 3rd thing of the day was on our drive to Thessaloniki. We stopped in Veris to see where St. Paul had spoken. Only the 3 steps remain from where he spoke but then in the 60s the monument was built to mark its location. Had an interesting lasagna from a unique restaurant. The little old lady goes to the market to pick what is fresh to buy and she makes lunch in huge silver pots and she and her daughter in law personally spoon your food as you walk through the kitchen.
