I asked our guide George if it's always this hot in Athens at this time of year. He said it is hot but 'we are having a heatwave now'. Temperatures reached the upper 90s. Even my shorthair haircut does not stop the dripping sweat that trails from the top of my head down my back. It's the most unpleasant feeling. My hanky really got a workout today! Our sightseeing took place in Delphi in the morning. We started by walking down a winding path to the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, and the tholos. It was constructed between 380 BC and 360 BC. The Circular building is the Tholos. Then we headed to the archaeological Museum to see artifacts that have been found in Delphi. It was not a huge museum but had some interesting things to see. Still baffled they're stuff from BC. Our guide stopped at a few key pieces to give us a lot of background and history. The last thing of the day involved The temple of Apollo, an ancient theater a treasury and a stadium.
Revered as early as 1500 BC, the sacred precinct was home to the famous Oracle, in which the god himself counseled his people through the mouth of an intoxicated priestess. Seeing them involved quite the hike.
It had stairs and it had inclined curving paths. After I turned each corner I would hope to see the stadium but alas it just lead to another inclined path. That happened at least 10 times before I finally reached the stadium. Let's just say my beat red face was cause for concern for others by the time I got to the top. I drank a bottle of water on the way up and then refilled it from some spout coming out of the mountain. I drank that bottle of water by the time I got to the bottom. Then I even bought another bottle of water to drink. Sad thing is I'm not even sure if the stadium was worth all of that exerted energy. Yes it was interesting to see but it wasn't the best stadium we see. Then lunch altogether and another long bus ride. Getting a little tired of the long bus rides. Treated myself to a dip and the nice pool after a long ride.
The different colored stone is because part is original and part had to be reconstructed.
Red all over.......but I did it!
