Food...food and more food

Only 2 things on the agenda today- a walking food tour at the start of the day and a concert at the end. We began by taking the metro to meet our tour guide. It was in a part of Athens that we hadn't been before so it was nice to get around with a local.  We began by eating some Koulouri. It was bread covered in seasame seeds. It is thin and comes in the shape of a circle. It was a cross between a hard roll and breadstick consistancy. Our guide told us Greeks have coffee and cigarettes for breakfast but they will sometimes grab one of these on the way to work. After that we headed to Lukumades that is famed for their round shaped donuts (think donut hole). The ouside had just a slight crisp to it and the inside was soft. It was covered in honey. Pretty tasty. Off to a shop that sold oils, cheese and olives next. We had a lot of things to taste there. Some good...some not my taste. Olive oil in bread was good. Yogurt not so much until the sour cherries were added. Probably more on the list of things i didnt like because of my pickiness-olives, sun dried tomatoes, feta covered in some goop, couple of drinks. Glad when we moved on from that place (had to stand whoe time so my back was happy to move on too). A sampling of chickpeas, zucchini balls and bread and tzatziki sauce greeted us at our next stop. I LOVE tzatziki sauce!!! The other stuff......eh. (Probably thinking by now, why the heck did you do a food tour??? For the expierence....) next we tried 2 pieces of meat at a small butcher that were cured differently. Eh......We stopped shortly at a spice and herb shop to hear some history but didnt have to eat :). Last 2 stops involved trying spinach pie and cream pie (not what you're thinking) and having a traditional gyro. That was my favorite stop. The tour also took us through the local fish, meat and fruit markets. We were stupid tourists stopping to take pictues when all they wanted to do was sell their fresh catch of the day. Not having them in Chicago had our eyes widened. A man scaled a fish faster then I can pull a package out the freezer! Not gonna lie- I may have stumbled a little upon seeing the pigs feet, head and lamb body hanging (its eyes were bulging). The whole tour took almost 4 hours and wasn't too much walking so it was a delightful way to spend the am. Haven't gone to the concert yet. Even though it'll be past my bedtime (doesnt start til 9) couldn't pass up the opportunity. Its in The Odeon of Herodes Atticus which is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis. The building was completed in 161 AD and then renovated in 1950. I mean come on...... The experience of hearing it there should make the late night, steep steps and hopefully not too hard seats (we do sit on a cushion) worth it. Had to pack the suitcase before going because tomorrow we begin our 6 day tour of Northern Greece. We may have others on our tour and on our bus. Let's hope they're not too annoying and i have my own seat to sit in (not have to sit directly next to anyone)   :)
