Motor city across the pond

Off we went to the Motor city across the pond- Coventry.  Also, once a bustling city of car makers, it too has seen better days (in terms of companies making cars).  Currently there is only 1 car manufacture still in town.  In the past there were multiple manufacturers-Triumph, Jaguar, Rover, Swinger to name just a few.  This museum just finished a 9 million pound renovation project.  It takes you through the eras of transportation.  It was well laid out, had great descriptions and it's collection was amazing!  Our guide was wonderfully knowledgeable too.

When World War II began, the automotive factories turned to making tanks and other military vehicles.  This made the city of Coventry a prime target for Germany.  The subsequent air raid devastated the city.  The St. Michael's Cathedral was hit.  The heat of the fire made the iron support beams melt and warp, which caused the pillars to fall.  The result of this was that the ceiling collapsed and the church was ruined.  The pictures below show what was left.  The new cathedral was built next to it after a design contest.  A repeating theme of the church is the crown of thorns.  It is a STUNNING church.  I could have spent HOURS but we needed to get the bus :(       Our guide, John was so full of so much information it was FANTASTIC!  If I was thinking, I would have recorded it.
